Burnham & Morrill Co., a widely known Portland, Maine landmark, has been in the canning business for more than a century. Back in 1867, George Burnham, who previously had been a partner in the canning firm of Rumery & Burnham, started his own business and was joined by John E. Burnham and Charles Morrill.

For nearly 50 years, the company was owned by the Burnham family, but in 1910 George B. Morrill, Sr. bought out the Burnham's interest and soon after, B&M moved from 13 Franklin Street, Portland, to its present site on Casco Bay. In 1965, the address of the B&M plant was redesigned as "One Bean Pot Circle." Since the company's beginnings in 1867, the excellence of B&M products has been recognized both nationally and internationally, a fact attested to by the numerous medals and awards received over the years from U.S. and world trade expositions.

For many years, attempts to "can" baked beans were unsuccessful. The resulting product lacked the flavor and texture of the homemade variety. Baking in pots, preferably in a brick oven, is one of the secrets of the New England baked bean. Burnham & Morrill Co. was well aware of this secret, and they began to bake beans all day long in this true New England way. The flavor of juicy salt pork combines with a sauce made from a centuries-old recipe and slowly penetrates the beans as they reach a golden brown. The beans are sealed in tins or glass pots to hold their freshness and flavor until the container is opened.

Although white pea beans are preferred by the majority of consumers in the United States, red kidney beans are popular with many people in New England. Both varieties are packed by B&M. In addition to Brick Oven Baked Beans, Burnham & Morrill also produces a companion product of old New England–B&M brown bread, both with and without raisins.

B&M employees take pride in producing products of superior quality. Their skill, combined with the finest of raw materials and a carefully controlled production process, helps ensure a high standard of quality.
